Smart Buildings: Using Smart Technology to Save Energy in Existing Buildings

Smart buildings use information and communication technologies (ICT) to enable automated building operations and control. They enhance occupants’ comfort and productivity while consuming less energy than conventional buildings.

This report, released by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) is aimed at energy efficiency programme designers and administrators interested in the cost-effective energy savings that smart buildings achieve as well as building operations teams (and information technology personnel).

The document provides a description of the functions and applications of smart technologies in existing commercial buildings (incl. HVAC, lighting, and plug loads), how they differ from conventional technologies and how much energy they can save. The authors evaluate the benefits and challenges involved in installing smart technology in existing buildings and document energy savings from the component to the whole building level. The report also presents case studies of utility energy efficiency programmes that use smart technologies, and concludes with recommendations for expanding these programmes.
